Abstract
Between 1990 and 2000, the rate of
homeownership in the U.S. rose from
64.2 percent to a record high of 66.2
percent (Simmons 2001). The rising
homeownership rate is particularly
striking, given that during that decade the
country saw substantial growth in its immigrant
population, which generally tends to have lower
homeownership rates than U.S.-born residents.
