Her husband’s employer, a remodeling contractor, died after catching COVID-19, and his company shut down. Her husband now does odd jobs as a day laborer, earning about $400 a month.

L.A.’s already pricey real estate market is getting pricier.
Los Angeles County’s 2021 Assessment Roll, which looks at all taxable property in the county as of Jan. 1, grew by $62.9 billion to $1.76 trillion — that’s the 11th consecutive annual increase.

“We were all a little bit pleasantly startled to find out that the Assessment Roll, despite the pandemic, would grow during a pandemic-induced recession,” L.A. County Assessor Jeff Prang said.

“The end of the pandemic, but not renter distress” is the headline of a new study from UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies and the Lusk Center for Real Estate, which found that the rent debt in Los Angeles is substantial. Los Angeles County has $3 billion in total rent debt, and Los Angeles city has about $1.5 million in unpaid rent from the pandemic. Among those with rent debt, the average tenant owes $2,800 in unpaid rent.

LOS ANGELES, CA – July 29, 2021 – In a new survey of Los Angeles County renters, 49% of households reported that they were unable to pay all of their rent during the pandemic.

The study, by researchers from UCLA and the University of Southern California, found the median amount renters owe their landlords is $2,800. That suggests that countywide, tenants owe landlords upwards of $3 billion.

A new survey found the median amount renters owe their landlords is $2,800, suggesting that tenants countywide owe landlords upward of $3 billion. The study by UCLA and USC researchers also shows how renters face financial distress that will be difficult to overcome.
