Abstract
The economic development and land use policies
pursued in Southern California throughout most of the
twentieth century encouraged rapid population
growth and urbanization of land. The five counties of
Southern California – Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside,
San Bernardino and Ventura – currently support 16
million people, a seven-fold increase since 1900. The
growth shows no signs of waning, with the five counties adding 2 million people during the 1990s.
