O.C. market enjoys southern comforts

The USC Lusk Center for Real Estate says immigrants and their children are expected to account for 82 percent of population increases over the next 40 years -- and could be a force that helps stabilize housing prices. "Nurturing links within the immigrant community is key to building a new rank of homeowners," said Lusk's Gary Painter.

A Lusk study looked at 60 mid-sized cities outside "gateway" cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago - and that doesn't include The O.C. The study found immigrant homeownership rates, while still lagging behind those for non-immigrants, increased to 53.4 percent in 2005, up from 51.1 percent vs. rates of 65.7 percent for the total population in those towns in 2005 -- up only slightly from 65.2 percent in 2000...
