Some panelists noted that the mortgage interest deduction is politically polarizing because of the disconnect between how people use it and how it is perceived in general. For instance, most people in Texas do not itemize their taxes (indeed, only about a third of all U.S. taxpayers do), and therefore they cannot take advantage of the MID, noted Richard Green of the USC Lusk Center. But studies show "they love the mortgage interest deduction..."
