Megaprojects and Risk: An Anatomy of Ambition

We live in the age of the megaproject. Extremely large, multi billion dollar engineering works are increasingly seen as the solution to complex problems of mobility, economic development, and environmental control. Bent Flyvbjerg conducted the first systematic analysis of mega-projects from twenty nations around the world and came to the conclusion that these projects are routinely misrepresented to governing bodies, voters, and the media in order to get them authorized and underway. All too often, once completed, they fail to deliver on their promises. He will present this work, published in Megaprojects and Risk: An Anatomy of Ambition to draw lessons on how we in California can better position ourselves to address the complex problems of transportation, water supply, and flood control that megaprojects purport to solve.
