Richard Green, director of University of Southern California’s Lusk Center for Real Estate, on July 1 will begin a one-year appointment as senior adviser to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Green will advise HUD on ways to create a sustainable housing system, and one that would withstand market disruptions, according to a June 1 press release.
He replaces Edward Golding, who in March was appointed to the top spot of the Federal Housing Administration.
In the statement to announce the new role, Green said he has dedicated his career to the study of housing economics, and his research and information has been intended to guide the nation’s housing policy. “It’s an honor to be invited to the front lines of our our nation’s effort to provide safe, affordable housing to all,” Green said.
Kent Barrett, of the Hoyt Organization, which prepared the release at the behest of the Lusk Center, said Green would not be available for comment beyond the press release at this time.
Raphael Bostic, director of the USC Bedrosian Center on Governance and former assistant HUD secretary, will take on the added role of USC Lusk Center interim director until Green returns to USC after June 2016.
As part of the one-year appointment, Green will work with HUD’s office of policy development and research to help set the agenda for housing finance research and handle a range of housing finance projects. He will help guide HUD’s efforts to ensure access to home ownership and multifamily investment opportunities for creditworthy borrowers, and will be part of the rental housing policy working group.
Other tasks include weekly briefings with housing deputies and work with the Federal Housing Agency on housing-related matters affecting both agencies, according to the release.
