2005 Lusk100 Retreat Takes A Global Perspective

The impact of increasing globalization of the real estate industry and related sectors was on the minds of many industry leaders at the 2005 Lusk100 Annual Retreat held May 15 -17 at the Four Seasons Resort in Santa Barbara, California. Chairman of the Board and Senior Fellow Stan Ross along with Lusk Center Director and Chair Stuart Gabriel welcomed Lusk members and guests to two fascinating days of presentations that explored both the domestic and global perspectives of the real estate industry. From Michael Milken’s stirring opening keynote on the acceleration of innovative medical advancements in the global marketplace to Tom Barrack's factual assessment of capital markets within the US and international economies to Dale Anne Reiss’s compelling interview with KB Homes Chairman Bruce Karatz, the 2005 Retreat provided global perspectives from leaders in the development, financing, housing, planning and investment sectors of the real estate industry.

The 2005 Retreat also included panel presentations on Entertainment, Sports and Gaming, Community Creation and Global Capital Markets and discussion on housing, market trends and investment opportunities. MGM Mirage Chairman and CEO Terri Lanni discussed the $4.7 billion Project CityCenter in Las Vegas. Former California Governor and current Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown provided an entertaining dissertation on the impact of sports and entertainment entities on municipalities. Ken Wong, President of Westfield Corporation, Wellington Webb, former Mayor of Denver and Bert Selva, President and CEO of Shea Homes examined the sustainability of created communities. Tony Downs Senior Fellow with the Brookings Institute, reviewed California’s housing market in comparison with the US. Goldman Sachs’ Bill Dudley and the Lusk Center’s Director and Chair Stuart Gabriel reported on key economic and market trends as they affect real estate. Marcus and Millichaps’ President and CEO Harvey Green provided a global investment outlook. Real Capital President Bob White discussed “deals that drive the market.” Stephen Silk of Secured Capital, Ron Kravit of Blackacre Capital Management and Chris McGibbon, Western Region Manager for TIAA-CREF participated in a lively discussion on global capital, access, excess, opportunities and obstacles.

The 2005 Retreat kicked off with an elegant opening night reception and dinner at the stunning ocean front home of Mike Keston, followed by a gala reception at the Santa Barbara Art Museum and dinner at the stylish eatery NU on Monday evening.
