Oak Pass Capital Management (“Oak Pass Capital” or “OPC”) was formed in January 2011 to invest in high yielding commercial mortgage and real estate assets with its institutional investors. As part of OPC's platform, it provides investment and asset management services to private equity capital investors. Since forming the company, OPC has activity pursued the acquisition of a number of major commercial, multifamily and hospitality mortgage portfolios. These transactions totaled over $1.2 billion in principal balance comprised of 90 assets located nationally. The firm remains committed to aggressively target attractive risk adjusted higher yielding real estate opportunities and is currently pursuing multiple asset and single asset transactions.
Prior to forming OPC, Mr. Toppino was a Senior Principal at Square Mile Capital Management (“SMC”) from July 2008 to December 2010. As the head SMC’s West Coast office, Mr. Toppino focused on expanding the firm’s investment platform on the West Coast and growing its national loan acquisition activities. Mr. Toppino was successful in building a strong acquisition and management team and sourced, acquired and managed an attractive portfolio of high yield real estate equity, B notes and distressed senior debt.
Prior to Oak Pass and Square Mile, Mr. Toppino was a principal and founding partner of Secured Capital Corp ("SCC"). The company was formed in 1990 by Mr. Toppino and three other professionals from Drexel Burnham Lambert who collectively ran Drexel’s Commercial Mortgage Trading Group from 1986 to 1990. SCC was a real estate investment bank that focused on advising the commercial real estate sector. In 2006, Secured Capital merged with Eastdil Realty, a real estate investment banking and brokerage company and wholly owned subsidiary of Wells Fargo. Mr. Toppino served as a member of the Management Committee and head of its secondary mortgage sales business until he retired from Eastdil Secured in 2008. Mr. Toppino was also a founding partner of Secured Capital Japan Co. Ltd., a principal acquisition and asset management company to acquire distressed assets from Japanese financial institutions. Mr. Toppino is a board member, a member of the investment committee and shareholder. He was also a founding partner of STAM, a Paris based company that since 1996 has been an asset manager of real estate investments in France, Brussels and Spain.
Mr. Toppino holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the Fisher School of Accounting at the University of Florida and serves as a member of the Chairman’s Circle for the Kelly Bergstrom Center for Real Estate Studies at the University of Florida. Mr. Toppino is also an Executive Committee member of University of Southern California Lusk Center for Real Estate.
